Conversation with Josepine Breese
Associate Director at Kate Macgarry
What advice would you give to women starting in the art world?
I would encourage my younger self starting out to be aware of the long road ahead. Being informed is a huge advantage - identify your area of interest, see and read as much as possible. Be considerate with how you invest your energy and take time to build your network. Don’t be afraid to speak up.
Which 3 qualities do you think one must have to succeed?
I can’t account for success but tenacity and good humour have been useful to me. I’ve worn a few professional hats and operated on the mindset that it’s worth asking.
David Hockney once said, “It’s good advice to only believe what an artist does rather than what he says about his work.” Would you agree?
I gladly take the opportunity to speak to artists about their work, with a pinch of salt if necessary.
