NXT GEN is guided by an Advisory Board to ensure we remain valuable to our members, relevant to the sector, and committed to promoting diversity and equity for the next generation of arts professionals.

We asked them one simple question:

What Do You Wish You’d Known When Starting Your Arts Career?

“I wish I'd known that I could never please everyone. (And that if I did please everyone, I'd be doing it all wrong)."

Harriet Lloyd-Smith, Editor of Plaster Magazine

“I wish I’d known how important relationships, social presence, and community are to curatorial practice.

As an introvert who once preferred to hide away in rooms with paintings for company, I’ve learned that being a curator means being a friend, confidant, protector —serving not only artists but also a community that extends beyond the museum demographic.”

Aindrea Emelife, Curator, Modern and Contemporary at MOWAA

“My biggest mistake was not negotiating my salary when I moved into arts management. Now, I always tell people: know your worth. And if you don’t, ask a friend.”

Jessye Parke, Deputy Director of Development at the Royal College of Art

“The beauty and tragedy of a career in the arts is that there is no singular path. As you network with senior professionals, don't underestimate the power of your own vision and creativity to build your own brand. There's ample room for entrepreneurship and innovation. Just back yourself up, and you'll find the resources.”

Sneha Shah, Founder of Curaty

We hope that NXT GEN represents a significant step forward in fostering a more inclusive and informed community of art professionals.
