Who was the last artist to really catch your eye?
I first came across Rhys Coren when he was still studying at the Royal Academy Schools, where I chaired the Patrons’ Committee. Rhys himself is a larger than life, extremely likeable personality. This is reflected in his colourful work which references animation and music. His work is unique in style and beautifully executed. I was pleased to see that, soon after his final year show, Rhys had been taken on by some great galleries and he is going from strength to strength.
Do you feel lucky to do what you do?
Enormously. Very few lawyers get to work on a daily basis with such interesting and talented clients, and on such a wide variety of fascinating matters. One day I can be dealing with a major acquisition of an artwork, or advising on the Fourth Plinth. The next day I might be sitting in a well-known artist's studio discussing the terms of their gallery representation. The following day I could be negotiating a dispute resolution on behalf of a dealer.
What is a good reason to say no?
When the person asking you to do something does not value you or your time.
