Conversation with Marlene Von Carnap
Director, Michael Werner Gallery
If you were to give advice to your younger self, what would it be?
It's a total cliché: No need to rush. Follow your intuition and you'll get there.
What are you excited about right now?
This September, Aaron Curry will have his first solo exhibition at STPI in Singapore. I have never been to the city and can't wait to go. Also this September, a comprehensive Immendorff retrospective will open at Haus der Kunst in Munich. It's going to be fantastic to be able to see the entire spectrum of his work.
Tell us about a woman, well-known or not, whom you admire and why?
My colleague Kadee is a great inspiration. She is very smart, assertive and successful but very kind at the same time. It seems these qualities can work in tandem.
What advice would you give to women starting in the art world?
Try to find out what you enjoy and what you're good at as early as possible. Try to acquire the skills needed to get there, but be open to any opportunities that come your way.
Which 3 qualities do you think one must have to succeed?
Resilience, patience, and creativity
Which female artist, living or dead, would you invite to a fantasy dinner party and why?
Eva Hesse, probably. Not because it would be a light-hearted and jolly dinner, but because Hesse's incredible life story and progressive work would provide endless material for questioning.
