New 100 Bishopsgate Install

Amelia Bowles: Komorebi

September 2024 – February 2025

On view at 100 Bishopsgate until February 2025, Bowles’ installation, in partnership with Brookfield Properties, transforms the ground floor, inviting viewers to explore perspectives that bridge exterior and interior spaces while examining the relationship between space, mass, and materiality.

100 Bishopsgate

With only 13% of public sculptures in London created by female artists, according to ArtUK.org, how do you think increasing visibility for female sculptors impacts the narrative?

This statistic feels incredibly regressive. It’s so exciting to be working with AWITA and Brookfield Properties, as Beyond the Matrix is a platform that will alter that narrative. It is the greatest privilege to create a public artwork that will become a part of everyday lives, everyday scenes.

About

The partnership initiative – entitled ‘Beyond the Matrix’ - is the second showcase co-created by Brookfield Properties and AWITA signifying their continued commitment to the visual arts and supporting the work and labour of female creatives. AWITA Members were invited to submit a curatorial proposal in response to the fast-paced and ever-changing city-scape of London. The 2 commissions were selected by a panel of experts and the first pairing starred artist Jodie Carey and curator Eve Miller (of Edel Assanti Gallery). This second pairing platforms newly commissioned, site-specific artworks by Amelia Bowles, curated by Millie Jason Foster, Director of Gillian Jason Gallery.

Curator Millie Jason Foster proposed a series of dynamic sculptures to capture the flow of energy through the entrance hall of 100 Bishopsgate. These responsive works shift and adapt to their surroundings, interacting with visitors as they compress and release with movement. Bowles, known for site-specific installations, explores the relationship between natural phenomena and urban spaces. Komorebi, inspired by sunlight filtering through trees, integrates light and shadow to create calming, rhythmic patterns. Through changing hues of yellow, blue, and pink, the installation offers a moment of reflection amidst the daily bustle, enhancing emotional well-being and cognitive relief.

Sculpture is ripe for a reframe as an art discipline and at Brookfield Properties we are fortunate to have large, light-filled spaces which are powerful environments to showcase thought- provoking artworks, free for tenants and the public to enjoy. Excitingly, this second Beyond the Matrix pairing enabled us to commission site-specific work and, at the same time, offers the artist a new income stream
