Hardwiring Change For Women in the Arts Workplace Panel Event

Tuesday 18th March | Deutsche Bank London HQ

350 art professionals from across the sector convened at Deutsche Bank UK Headquarters to learn the results of the Artnet X AWITA survey, Hardwiring Change for Women in the Arts Workplace. A panel of cultural leaders addressed systemic challenges, and explored actionable opportunities for gender equity in the arts. The key takeaways in the room were the importance of transparency and flexibility, the need for robust HR policies, and the benefits of cross-sector and reverse mentoring.

Speakers included Sadie Coles (Founder and Director, Sadie Coles Gallery), India Phillips (Managing Director, Bonhams), and Clarrie Wallis (Director, Turner Contemporary), moderated by Margaret Carrigan (News Editor, Artnet). Opening remarks by Mary Findlay (Senior Art Curator), Deutsche Bank, Naomi Rea (Editor-in-Chief, Artnet) and Sigrid Kirk (Co-Founder of AWITA).

Deutsche Bank has a long-standing engagement with and commitment to London's artistic and cultural community and this event is a continuation of this support for representation in the arts.

Cross-sector mentoring has been invaluable to me as curator turned Director—guidance from a startup offered fresh perspectives. Equally important is reverse mentoring, where younger colleagues bring different insights."

Clarrie Wallis, Director of Turner Contemporary

“Everybody needs to know their rights and what's expected of them. But they also need to know what's expected of the organization that's employing them.”

Sadie Coles, Founder and Director, Sadie Coles HQ

“I think the minute that you start to talk about pay it suddenly becomes very real. I think everyone in the room feels that. I think transparency is the pathway to achieving salary progression”

India Phillips, Managing Director at Bonhams
