Ethics and Income in the Arts
Friday 31st January | Bonhams
Members visited Cure³, a contemporary art fundraising exhibition at Bonhams, to explore how to develop an impact-led approach to income generation and what this means in practice. Devised by Artwise Curators, Laura Culpan and Susie Allen, Cure³ has raised £2 million for Parkinson's since establishing in 2017. The unique concept centres around each artist being given a bespoke Perspex cube to interact with in any way to create original artwork on or within. The results are highly sought-after and collectable artworks.
The conversation was guided by expert Caroline McCormick, Director of Achates, a purpose-led cultural sector consultancy focused on building resilience and integrity within the sector.
Many organizations today are grappling with the challenge of balancing financial viability with artistic and cultural purpose. Caroline emphasized that transparency is critical. Cultural institutions are under immense pressure—whether from economic uncertainty, political shifts, or the rapid evolution of digital engagement. These challenges make it more important than ever to carefully define our purpose and effectively communicate our value to society.
Caroline spoke to members about their latest development, Achates Community - an online leadership programme designed to empower cultural sector professionals with the tools and knowledge for a sustainable future.
