About the book

Philanthropy in the Arts: A Game of Give and Take, a new book by Leslie Ramos, explores the changing shape and future of philanthropy in the art world at a time of crisis in arts and cultural funding. Published by Lund Humphries as part of their ‘Hot Topics in the Art World’ series, the book offers an open and wide-ranging exploration of philanthropy in the arts from the perspectives of both the donors and the recipients, seeking to improve understanding on both sides

Arts philanthropy is at a crucial moment: many arts organisations are facing a financial crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic exposed the fragility of existing funding structures, and various social initiatives and causes have thrown renewed focus on how the arts are funded. Around the world, a new generation of philanthropists is emerging with different motivations and priorities. Within the context of this rapidly changing landscape, Ramos explores what the future holds for arts philanthropy and provides readers with a guide to navigate this new world.

Separated into four sections, the book considers four key facets of philanthropy in the arts: giving, taking, and the barriers facing arts philanthropy both today and in the future. Philanthropy in the Arts includes interviews with key decision-makers and stakeholders across arts philanthropy, from museum directors and board members to artists, wealth experts and fundraising specialists from across the globe. Voices include Laurence des Cars, President of the Louvre; Jessica Morgan, Director of Dia Art Foundation; Jason Herrick, Chief Philanthropy Officer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; Michael Armitage, Artist and Founder of Nairobi Contemporary Art Institute; and Marguerite Hoffman, the Dallas-based art collector and philanthropist.

Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation

Nicoletta Fiorucci Foundation is a non-profit arts organisation that promotes experimentation and innovation in contemporary art and design with a focus on ecology, sustainability and inclusivity. Based in London, but structured as an archipelago of homes and residency spaces in various locations in Europe, the Foundation commissions and produces visionary projects and acts as a support system for artists, designers, and institutions. Founded by Nicoletta Fiorucci and building on the legacy of the Fiorucci Art Trust, the Foundation currently encourages the exploration of art through multisensory and unconventional approaches while fostering the cross-pollination of radical ideas.

Currently on display is an exhibition of work by Paola Bay titled “Portals.” The project stems from the long-term friendship between Nicoletta Fiorucci and the artist, who over the years shared various practices and ceremonies that helped build their spiritual journey.
