1. Growing International Recognition of Philippine Art
2024 was a landmark year, with Filipino artists featured in major exhibitions at MoMA PS1, the Hammer Museum, and shortlisted for the Turner Prize. Southeast Asian art is increasingly being recognised globally.
2. The Role of Private Collectors and Museums
As attention shifts to Southeast Asia, Filipino artists are gaining visibility. However, stronger infrastructure through major contemporary art museum shows and a biennale with a rigorous programme, is needed to sustain momentum.
3. Global Market Expansion
Filipino collectors are buying internationally, while institutions in the US, UK, and France are acquiring Philippine art.
“More than about 75% of what we sell in New York is to international clients. We're selling to a lot of museums and a lot of institutional acquisitions are happening.” - Speaker
4. Building Foundations for Global Recognition
As global interest grows, Philippine museums, galleries, and artists must strengthen curatorial and institutional frameworks to support long-term recognition.
5. Must-Visit Institutions
Key sites include the National Museum of Fine Arts, Ateneo Art Gallery, Ayala Museum, CCP, and private museums. The Church of the Angry Christ in Bacolod is also a cultural landmark.
6. Tips for Young Collectors
Distinguishing between trendy and significant art requires education, art history knowledge, and recognising artists who make unique contributions rather than following passing trends.
