AWITA X JW ANDERSON

“SHOPPERS, SHOES & SACKS”

Holly Stevenson Curated by Sid Motion

1st November - 11th November 2022 | Install Photography

Sid Motion Gallery presents an installation of new ceramics by Holly Stevenson at the JW Anderson Flagship Store. Holly has responded directly to the JW Anderson collection, creating a series of works that embodies the historic link between art and fashion. As the works ‘look’ and ‘lean’ so characterfully in their personified way, the placement of the branded merchandise around the artworks will strike up a dialogue between the pairing.

The sexual relevance of Holly Stevenson’s work makes it well placed to be shown in the heart of Soho, where the artist’s interest in these histories collide with their surroundings. Her forms entwine the male and female, unapologetically blurring gender binaries. Much like the neon signs of the store and the surrounding streets, the works are colourfully painted in high gloss glazes. The sculptures are painted in celadon glazes using ancient Chinese techniques. Whilst in keeping with historic glazes of the medium’s traditions, the colours and forms of the sculptures are reminiscent of children’s toys - this colour palette is also shared with that of contemporary sex toys.

Sid Motion is the Founder and Director of Sid Motion Gallery. The gallery brings a range of vibrant artists working within different media to the fore – often showcasing them for the first time and offering emerging artists exposure to an international audience. To date, the gallery has hosted over 50 physical exhibitions, pop-up exhibitions, exhibitions in virtual reality and online. Sid Motion Gallery opened in 2016 in a former betting shop in Kings Cross. In 2019 the gallery relocated to a larger space in South East London. With high ceilings and abundant natural light, the new space allows them to bring artworks into focus and create thoughtful juxtapositions.
