Association of Women in the Arts hosts events that offer practical advice and/or are topically relevant to our members’ professional career development or their interests. Each event falls under at least one of our central pillars: networking, professional development, and mentoring.
'Erotic: Passion and Desire'
We are often asked how we can affect change if only half the art world is involved in the conversation. Galvanising our male peers, colleagues, friends, and partners to be advocates for change is vital.
Mentoring Walk and Talk
We paired up 40 women and walked from Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac to Somerset House. We asked mentees in advance to specify which particular areas or subjects they wanted to discuss.
Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art
AWITA members had An Exclusive View of the Brand New Goldsmiths Centre for Contemporary Art. The exhibition programme so far, overseen by the gallery director Sarah McCrory, includes shows dedicated to Mika Rottenberg, the late feminist artist Alexis Hunter and the overlooked post-war Chicago Imagists.
Dutch photographer Carla van de Puttelaar has photographed a selection of women from the art world, inspired by the work of Dutch Old Master paintings.
20/20 Vision at Phillips
A rapid-fire discussion pairing 20 women from the art world, hosted at Phillips and moderated by Melanie Gerlis (columnist and contributor, Financial Times and editor-at-large, The Art Newspaper).
November Walk and Talk
We paired up 42 women and walked from Seprentine Galleries to Alan Cristea Gallery. We asked mentees in advance to specify which particular areas or subjects they wanted to discuss.
International Women’s Day
We were joined by Parveen Adams, psychoanalytic theorist, to celebrate International Women's Day at a breakfast view of Lorna Simpson's exhibition "Unanswerable" at Hauser & Wirth.
June Walk and Talk
Four our third edition of mentoring programme “Walk and Talk” we paired up our thirty six participating members, and walked between Tate Britain, to Royal Academy for around forty minutes.
Christmas Drinks Blain|Southern
We were delighted to end the year with Christmas Drinks at Blain|Southern, with a private view of their wonderful Chiharu Shiota exhibition 'Me Somewhere Else'. Join us and celebrate the festive season.
Everything at Once
To celebrate AWITA's one year anniversary, members were given a private view of 180 The Strand's Everything at Once exhibition, courtesy of the Vinyl Factory and Lisson Gallery. Lisson's Curatorial Director Greg Hilty and Hana Noorali provided a short guided tour of the exhibition, with the gallery's involvement with female artists in mind.
The Art of Mentoring
The Art of Mentoring was held at Christie’s King Street. In a discussion moderated by AWITA Advisory Board Member Sophie Macpherson, Georgina Adam and Melanie Gerlis provided a nuanced response to the topic of mentoring, by sharing an insight as to their own mentor-mentee model of a relationship.
Frances Morris And Rachel Whiteread
In September 2017, AWITA Advisory Board Member Frances Morris discussed with artist Rachel Whiteread Rachel’s career and practice, as well as her just- opened retrospective at Tate. The event was held at the British Council.
Sonia Boyce, Thelma Golden and Zoe Whitley discussed with moderator and AWITA Advisory Board Member Caroline Douglas how they had approached and embraced transitions throughout their professional lives. Transitions took place at the Jerwood Space.
Mentor Walk and Talk
We paired up our thirty participating members, and walked between Sculpture in the City, to White Cube for around forty minutes. We asked mentees in advance to specify which particular areas or subjects they wanted to discuss, and then paired them with senior (or peer) women who had relevant experience and could offer advice.
Wisdom of the Artworld
In a panel discussion moderated by Louisa Buck; Margot Heller, Melanie Keen, Kate MacGarry, Valeria Napoleone, Maureen Paley and Cheyenne Westphal discussed what they wish they had known when they started their careers. The panel offered insights from trusting your instincts, to the value of strong role models. The event was held at the Arts Club, Mayfair.
