May 2019

We had a lovely start to the day at Richard Saltoun’s gallery, viewing Rose English’s “Forms, Feminisms and Femininities” last month. It was a privilege to hear the artist speak about her work; AWITA members were then able to catch up over breakfast.

We’re looking forward with great interest to Photo London, and are delighted that the work of so many female photographers will be on show. To celebrate, we’ve partnered with Photo London to showcase an exclusive panel discussion for our members.  Author Charlotte Jansen will be in conversation with three contemporary photographers – Juno Calypso, Hannah Collins and Mary McCartney, alongside Maryam Eisler photographer and collector, Emma Lewis Assistant Curator Tate, and Hannah Watson Director T J Boulting, to discuss “The Photographer and Her Subject: do women see things differently?”.

Our book recommendation, in this month of Photo London, has to be Charlotte Jansen’s “Girl on Girl: Art and Photography in the Age of the Female Gaze”. We’d also recommend continuing with “The Leaders”, by Zing Tsjeng, the next in the series “Forgotten Women”. It’s a must for anyone who enjoyed “The Artists”.

Finally, the May "Spotlight" section features members Nina Langford, Irina Bourmistrova, Sarah Barker and Giulia Campaner.
